Casalguidi is a style of embroidery that consists of 4 different techniques -pulled thread, needle lace, needle weaving, and raised work. Traditionally, it is stitched in white on white or cream. This piece is stitched on 32 count grey linen with pastel mauve and green floss for the pulled thread and the surface work is white perle cotton.
Variations in Blue is the first piece I worked without a pattern or chart. It is a stitch sampler that includes canvaswork, blackwork, and raised work including needleweaving and velvet stitch using stranded cotton and various decorative threads.
The background of the green circle is lace paper attached to cotton fabric. All the needle lace stitching of the ladies, flowers, and leaves is attached to this base. 2 of the flower pots are melted tyvek. The circle is mounted on handmade paper.
An etui is a small ornamental box for containing embroidery accessories such as needles, pins, scissors, tweezers, bodkins, etc. In the centre is a little container for a thimble. The outside surface of the etui is hand dyed cotton highlighted with gold metallic. The top is painted canvas stitched with various specialty threads. The interior surfaces are plain cotton.
This was an embroidery workshop I took a few years ago. It is the last of my UFO’s (unfinished objects). I did not enjoy doing the final construction so now I know why it took me so long to complete.
Lace Berries was designed as a class sample for teaching needle lace in 3 dimensions. The background has striped panels of blackwork and
needle lace patterns.
